Say it with hearts

What could say "I care" more than this romantic afghan? It’s made with an interesting technique that creates a self-fringe as you crochet.
Finished Size
50 1/2" x 63" not including Fringe.
- Red Heart® Super Saver Art. E300 by Coats & Clark or worsted yarn: 32 oz. Country Rose #374; 32 oz. Aran #313
- I/5.5mm hook or hook size needed to obtain gauge
Gauge
7 sc = 2"; 15 sc rows = 4".
Basic Stitches
Ch, sl st, sc, dc.
Special Stitches
For front dc (fdc); working in front of next ch sp, dc in next skipped st on row before last. Skip next ch sp on last row behind dc.
For back dc (bdc); working behind next ch sp, dc in next skipped st on row before last. Skip next ch sp on last row in front of dc.
Note
Leave 5" ends at beginning and end of each row when joining new color or fastening off to be worked into Fringe later.
Afghan
Row 1: With rose, ch 222, sc in second ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn. Fasten off. (221 sc made)
Row 2: Join aran with sc in first st, (ch 1, skip next st, sc in next st) across, turn. Fasten off. (111 sc, 110 ch sps)
Row 3: Join rose with sc in first st, (bdc -- see Special Stitches, sc in next st) across, turn. Fasten off. (221 sts)
Row 4: Join aran with sc in first st, sc in each st across, turn. Fasten off.
Row 5: Join rose with sc in first st, sc in next st, (ch 1, skip next st, sc in next st) across to last st, sc in last st, turn. Fasten off.
Row 6: Join aran with sc in first st, sc in next st, (fdc -- see Special Stitches, sc in next st) across to last st, sc in last st, turn. Fasten off.
Row 7: Join rose with sc in first st, sc in each st across, turn. Fasten off.
Row 8: Join aran with sc in first st, (ch 1, skip next st, sc in next st) across, turn. Fasten off.
Rows 9-10: Repeat rows 3 and 4.
Row 11: Join rose with sc in first st, (ch 1, skip next st, sc in next st) across, turn. Fasten off.
Row 12: Join aran with sc in first st, (bdc, sc in next st) across, turn. Fasten off.
Rows 13-15: Repeat rows 11 and 12 alternately, ending with row 11.
Row 16: Join aran with sc in first st, (bdc, sc in next st) 5 times, (fdc, sc in next st) 3 times, *(bdc, sc in next st) 7 times, (fdc, sc in next st) 3 times; repeat from * 9 more times, (bdc, sc in next st) 2 times, turn. Fasten off.
Row 17: Repeat row 11.
Row 18: Join aran with sc in first st, (bdc, sc in next st) 4 times, (fdc, sc in next st) 5 times, *(bdc, sc in next st) 5 times, (fdc, sc in next st) 5 times; repeat from * 9 more times, bdc, sc in last st, turn. Fasten off.
Row 19: Repeat row 11.
Row 20: Join aran with sc in first st, (bdc, sc in next st) 3 times, (fdc, sc in next st) 6 times, *(bdc, sc in next st) 4 times, (fdc, sc in next st) 6 times; repeat from * 9 more times, bdc, sc in last st, turn. Fasten off.

Row 32: Repeat row 16.
Rows 33-36: Repeat rows 11 and 12 alternately.
Row 37: Join rose with sc in first st, sc in each st across, turn. Fasten off.
Rows 38-189: Repeat rows 2-37 consecutively, ending with row 9.
Row 190: Sl st in first st, (ch 1, skip next st, sl st in next st across. Fasten off.
Finishing
Holding afghan with row 1 at top, working in starting ch on opposite side of row 1, join rose with sl st in first ch, (ch 1, skip next ch, sl st in next ch) across. Fasten off.
Fringe
For each Fringe, cut two strands of yarn each 10" long. With both strands held together, fold in half, insert hook in end of row, draw fold through, draw all loose ends including 5" end at end of row through fold. Tighten. Trim.
Matching colors, work Fringe in end of each row across short ends of Afghan.
